Borderlandia/Grid Paintings 2013-2020

Oil and acrylic paintings on canvas that range in size from 86” x 73” to 5” x 7”

The paintings of Borderlandia/Grids are inspired by the vast landscape of Uvalde, Texas and Piedras Negras, Mexico.  Painting landscapes is a way for me to understand the place where I am from.  I grew up fishing and hunting with my father who taught me how to look at the land.  My mother filled our home with textiles that created a soothing environment which helped me thrive in a sometimes hostile town.

These landscape paintings are abstract, but they express a range of emotions through repetitive mark making and resonating, vibrant colors. Abstract painting can be a way of observing the hope and horror of the borderlands and can help us imagine a better future for this land. These paintings are my valentine from the borderlands.
